The benefits of Rhodiola extract

Here at ATP Science we believe we could have helped Charlie Sheen before he went on his rant at his boss and got kicked off two and a half men, by taking one simple product of ours, Cort Rx.

What is Rhodiola extract:

Cort Rx is known for its support on the adrenal cortex, but we want to talk about one heavily studied ingredient which has shown to have positive effects on stress. Rhodiola Rosea has over 96 species globally, and there are 73 species of Rhodiola in China alone. Rhodiola is a perennial flowering plant from the Crassulacean family which has a large number of active compounds found within in it structure, such as:

  • Flavanoids: Are phytonutrients which are found within fruits and vegetable
  • Monoterpernes: Is a terpene which have shown to have anti septic properties, and even have an effect on increasing your mood.
  • Phenylpropanoids: Organic compounds which synthesised from plants to help with numerous psychological functions.
  • Triterpenes: Natural compounds biogenetically derived from active isoprene.
  • Phenolic acids: Polyphenols are found in a variety of plant-based foods that have a number of functions within the body.

Benefits of Rhodiola:

The chemical compounds in Rhodiola are showing to have positive effects on different cellular pathways. Rhodiola has been classified by Russian researchers as an adaptogen. Adaptogens work by reducing stress signals on the adrenals, regulating the nervous system, and supporting hormonal balance within the adrenal cortex.

One study of Rhodiola on rats has shown that there was a major impact on hippocampal neurons (forms part of the limbic system associated with memory) in several different ways. Depression can come from suppressed proliferation, and apoptotic changes (cell death) in the hippocampus (a very important part of the brain) from environmental stress. The study also looked into the impact that Rhodiola has on the 5-HT (serotonin) receptor. Within the studies, it seemed that Rhodiola had an effect on protecting the mitochondria in the neurons. Rhodiola also stabilises the mitochondrial membrane, improves mitochondrial oxidation, phosphorylation, regulates cellular energy metabolism, and has even showed to reduce apoptosis of the neurons. (Chen, et al., 2009)

Other adaptogenic properties Rhodiola has shown to have is the effects on protecting the central nervous system from the activity of monoamines (single amine molecule which is a neurotransmitter). The studies showed that when Rhodiola was given to rats for 10 days, it had an effect on the monoamines within the cerebral cortex, brain stem, and hypothalamus. The results showed to lower levels of norepinephrine and dopamine but having a dramatic increase in serotonin levels. It is believed that Rhodiola does this by having a beneficial effect on the enzymes which are responsible for monoamine degradation, monoamine oxidase, and catechol-O-methyltransferase. (Kelly, 2001)
