Episode 12 – Shilajit?!

Today episode is all about the Incredible Ingredient Compound, Shilajit. It’s actually called the Conqueror of Mountains and the Destroyer of Weakness.

Jeff: Matt good to have you today.

Matt: Oh, thanks.

Jeff: Mate, it’s good to be back after you kicked me to the curb last Episode with Steve Eadie; it was a good Episode, mate, very well done.

Matt: Thank you. We’ve just got to work out how to use our microphones better to have three people.

Jeff: Today, we want to be talking about some specific ingredients, and in fact, one ingredient, in particular, that I wanted to learn more about, and so do some of our listeners, is a miracle ingredient—and, I shouldn’t say it that way.

Jeff: I do don’t I? “It’s a miracle. Take this and you’ll become rich and handsome. All your problems are going to be over.”

I should say, it’s an outstanding ingredient, a really good one, called Shilajit, and let me give this unique Ayurvedic—it’s not a herb, compound is probably the best way to describe it, “Conqueror of Mountains and Destroyer of Weakness,” a literal interpretation from Ayurvedic text means Rock, Invincible.

Matt: Yeah, it’s pretty cool.

Jeff: Very cool.

Matt: The Australian way is our teaspoon of concrete so you can harden up.

Jeff: The PG version.

Matt: Yeah, I edited that one, for a change.

Jeff: So, what is it, Matt?

Matt: It’s a very strange ingredient. If you have a look at its botanical name, Asphaltum Punjabianum; it’s basically Asphalt, rocky rocks from the Punjab region.

Jeff: Which is India?

Matt: Well, I hope so, unless it’s from your Punjab region, I hope not.

Jeff: Gees. I go away for a week and this is what happens.

Matt: So, basically, what it is—as you know with the Himalayas they’re big rocks sticking up very high in the air. Tectonic plates have collided. Minerals that are normally found very deep in the core of the earth have now been pushed closer to the surface in certain regions of the world, typically mountain ranges. In those areas plants, hardy enough to survive those sorts of conditions between a kilometre to 10 kilometres above sea level, if they’ve got long enough root systems they can get down through the cracks in the rocks to get to the Mineral Pitch that’s found under the mountain. They will actually drag up Nutrients that normally we can’t find in any plants because they’re not close enough to the surface. So, certain really strong hardy plants, different Euphorbia species and things like that will root down and access materials that plants normally can’t access. They will then bring those materials up through the root system and, almost like a compost, they will create a resinous sap that will be secreted from the plants and harvested.

Jeff: Right.

Matt: So, you can imagine you will find things in that resinous compost material that you could never find in any plant, bark, roots or leaves. In areas that have minerals that we can’t find in other places, especially places like Australia and things like that. This Mineral Pitch that’s found in those areas has allowed us to create very unique compounds in that resinous sap, and that’s what we’re using. And, that’s why it’s really hard to find a good one.

Jeff: It’s funny Matt, I remember—how long ago was it? Probably a couple of years ago now, we would constantly be getting these packages coming in from all over that region whether it be China or India…

Matt: All over the world.

Jeff: And, you would bring these bits of dirt almost. What were you looking for? Because, there was obviously a lot that didn’t pass the test as per the—half the Himalayas is sitting out in the warehouse at the moment.

Matt: Yeah, I know, we could recreate them now.

Jeff: But, what was it that you were looking for?

Matt: Well, what you’ll find with Shilajit—it’s easier to say that than Ashphaltum–but with Shilajit it’s got some markers that people think are active ingredients, these things called Fulvic Acid; that’s just a marker to prove that we’ve got the right commodity. I personally don’t believe that’s the active ingredient.

Jeff: But, Fulvic Acid is a good qaulity ingredient.

Matt: Fulvic Acid is amazing.

Jeff: Let’s talk about that in a bit.

Matt: Yeah, we’ll talk about Fulvic Acid a little bit more. Apart from the Fulvic Acid component there are over 85 Ionic Minerals.

Jeff: What does Ionic mean?

Matt: It means that they’re in a dissolved sort of state, which means it’s easier for us to absorb them. They’ve got all of those Minerals…

Jeff: 85?

Matt: Over 85 that they’ve found, so far, in a good quality extract, which can all be measured. Certain Peptides can be found in it, and I’m not going to tell you all the stuff, we’ve got some pretty cool secrets hidden in here, Peptides, Lipids, Amino Acids, as well as all these other Minerals, as well as these other Benzopyrene compounds and that sort of stuff, and then we’ve also got the Fulvic Acids, which we standardise to mean that it’s an active ingredient.

Jeff: Wow!

Matt: Because there are so many awesome things in it there are so many companies out there trying to claim miraculous ingredients and miraculous benefits, and the other typical scenario is some people are out there saying, “No, the active ingredient is this, it’s Fulvic Acid,” and ours is 100% pure active ingredient. So, anyway, there’s a lot of dodginess out there in the way people try to market and sell this material because it’s not an easy material to understand fully.

So, what I was doing was having to go through, for starters, and do some little tests to make sure it is material. Because, what happens in the world is, and let me try to explain it. When you harvest Shilajit, naturally, it may only contain a very small very, very low percentage of Fulvic Acid, which they use as a marker, but because 99% of the people out there buying Shilajit believe that Fulvic Acid is the active ingredient that’s all they look at, they just want something containing Fulvic Acid.

So, what happens is, they take it out of the ground, and it’s very low in Fulvic Acid then they purify it, refine it, and basically extract the Fulvic Acid out. What a lot of dodgy companies are doing is buying this pure Fulvic Acid stuff that’s extracted from Shilajit at something like 80% and then mixing it with sawdust, powder, chalk, sand, whatever they want, to make it back down to around the 2% which most people buy. So, what you find is, the majority of the products out there are nothing more than sand or sawdust or something dodgy spiked up with an active ingredient that might show up on a test.

But, I know how to tell the difference. If I can get the stuff in and I can dissolve it in a little bit of water, we can do some small testing to make sure that it actually contains Lipids, that it contains Peptides, that it contains Aminos, that it contains all the other 85 minerals, and isn’t just sitting in a base of silicon which they then colour up. I’ve even had companies come back to me when I’ve said, “This isn’t even Shilajit,” and gone back to them and said it was a scam, they’ve come back to me saying, “Well, we can colour it if it’s the wrong colour, we can make it whatever colour you like,” or, “Do you want more active ingredient or less, you tell us how to make what you want and we will make it,” and it’s like, “No, I want you to harvest the stuff.” So, I’ve known you for about five years and you would have been seeing me doing this for that length of time but I’ve been doing it for another 10 years before that, just keep buying it, sourcing it, because each region creates a different product, so what we had to do was find a region that made a consistent product so we can work directly with the people that harvest it, and ours is from the Himalayas.

We’ve managed to get stuff from Russia, Afghanistan, any hills anywhere, they’ll just find any bit of dirt and send it to you and try to spike it up with Fulvic Acid and say now it’s Shilajit because it’s got this one marker in it. But, we know the properties that it has to have to actually be the dirt, and then we found someone who can consistently and reliably supply that to us, and we pretty much buy everything they get. And, if we need more we have to tell them with enough advance to actually harvest us more, and we’re the only ones that own it. So, we’re working with our own little Sherpas collecting our stuff.

Jeff: Well, the interesting thing is, Matt, what is Fulvic Acid, and I know it’s a great compound, so obviously a lot of companies are saying, “Well, we understand what it does, it’s got some great benefits, so therefore Fulvic Acid is the most important compound in Shilajit. So, what does Fulvic Acid do?

Matt: It’s a carrier molecule. So, Humus—you would have heard of peat?

Jeff: Not a clay?

Matt: No, not the cleaner. Peat that you find under the ground.

Jeff: Oh yeah, they’ve got lots of it in England.

Matt: Yeah, certain parts of the world have got heaps, and they get really good high Mineral—you know, in Australia and places like that our Peat is coal, so we miss a lot of these compounds, this Humus substances, or Humic Acid or Fulvic Acid. What they are, they’re carrier molecules, they can help deliver Nutrients. You know how I was saying there’s over 85 Mineral elements in Ionic form, well, the Fulvic Acid will drag that stuff out of your Gut and deliver it to you muscles and bones, it’s a carrier molecule to force Nutrients into your body. It also helps to Chelate and take toxins out.

Jeff: Right.

Matt: So, it works like a Detoxification, a Chelating agent. For example, you know when I broke my hand, what I’ve been doing in my healing, I was supposed to take six weeks to recover, I got them to take the plaster off in three weeks because it had fully healed right over and its thick strong bone now. I was taking high doses of Calcium and Magnesium with Shilajit to deliver, to force that Calcium and Magnesium to go into my bone and muscle tissue and to help my healing.

Jeff: Oh, but that’s impossible, Matt.

Matt: Yeah, that’s right. But, anyway, with and X-ray we can prove that it’s not.

Jeff: Matt’s had some people saying, “Well, obviously your hand wasn’t broken because you got the cast off after three weeks,” and Matt’s like, “Well no, it was broken,” and they’re like, “Well, how do you know?” “Well, the bone was sticking through the side,” and the X-rays showed that. So yeah, it’s amazing, actually, what you do.

Matt: Yeah, an open compound fracture and within three weeks it’s just like a bought one.

Jeff: Yeah.

Matt: But stronger because now I’ve got extra Calcium. Anyhow, what you’ll find is that Fulvic Acid helps to drive the Nutrients, acts as a carrier vehicle to take active ingredients in. Shilajit has been used in a lot of Ayurvedic Medicine for a long time for that reason, it improves the efficacy of whatever you combine it with. There’s an old Indian beverage that I love called Chyawanprash which has 48 different herbs and spices in it, and it’s got a bit of Shilajit in there to help deliver. Not enough for the Shilajit itself to be therapeutic but it just makes everything else work better.

Jeff: Right.

Matt: Studies on Shilajit show the toxicity is very low, you can take massive doses, but what we find is, you don’t need a massive dose, you need to get the dose exactly right. So, we work hard on trying to get the right dose.

Jeff: I remember, as well too, just thinking about how they utilise it, I remember you were saying you were asking all these companies, because there are few places out there that are selling this, “How do you actually extract the Shilajit?” A lot of the places were using Mercury.

Matt: Yeah, I know.

Jeff: Crazy. And, this is the thing we’re talking about ingredients in supplements, this is where you’ve got to have a level of trust in the company that you’re obviously purchasing your supplements from, whether it be dodging up ingredients like this other company that was prepared to sell us ‘Shilajit’, and I’m putting inverted commas here, simply because they’re just looking to make a buck, or using unsafe practises in terms of the way they extract the ingredient.

Matt: Well, they’ll say, “How much do you want to pay per kilo and what do you want it to look like, and we’ll make it for you.” I said, “No, I want the stuff that works,” and they’re like, “Oh well, we can’t help you there.” So, it’s quite an interesting thing with Shilajit.

I just want to tell you a little bit about what it does for different people, but it’s very important to get a good quality one, it’s really hard.

Jeff: So, in terms then, and we spoke about Fulvic Acid, and we talked how it’s got 80 Trace Minerals, there’s some other Enzymes in there as well.

Matt: Yeah.

Jeff: Why should men take it and why should women take it? What is the benefit for anyone, what is the general benefits for both sexes?

Matt: Well, I’ll start with the general stuff and then we’ll get a bit more specific. Generally, it will toughen you up, it will improve your Resilience, and it does not matter what your challenge is. So, it will help balance out your Immune System, it will have massive effects on Fatigue, really good for Digestion and Assimilation of Nutrients, fantastic for Detoxification. Some of the really exciting things about it is what it does on a cellular level for the Mitochondria, for the ability of your cells and the power houses behind your cells to be able to generate, utilise, harness, and preserve energy.

So, you would have heard of Coenzyme Q10?

Jeff: Yeah.

Matt: Coenzyme Q10 is a substance that we can supplement and it lives inside our cells and it drags Oxygen in to be used for fuel. So, it can reduce the amount of pressure it takes to get Oxygen out of your blood and into your cells. Shilajit will support Cellular Energy Production. To put it in perspective, Coenzyme Q10 people use for Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, they rave about it. The doses they use of Coenzyme Q10—most supplements are about 50mgs, but people take up to about 300mgs of Coenzyme Q10 to relieve Chronic Fatigue. One gram of Shilajit, which is the recommended daily dose—one gram of Shilajit will create Coenzyme Q10 in the Mitochondria equivalent to using up to 1500mgs of Coenzyme Q10. So, we can only take about 300mgs of CoQ10 as a supplement that are available, but 1gram of Shilajit will make more Coenzyme Q10 in your body than if you were to take 1500mgs of CoQ10 as a supplement. And, this isn’t taking it with CoQ10, by the way, this is just taking Shilajit and measuring your Coenzyme Q10 production.

Jeff: I don’t know a lot about Coenzyme Q10, Matt, but I know it’s got a few health benefits including Cellular Energy.

Matt: Mm.

Jeff: I take our product, which has got Shilajit in it, before going to be but I sleep like a baby, so it’s obviously not a stimulant.

Matt: What, you shit yourself? I’ve got babies, mate, you don’t want to be sleeping like a baby. One of them spews on himself, the other one craps and they both wake up with a boob in their mouth, so that’s not too bad.

Jeff: Well, two out of three ain’t bad; I didn’t get the boob. Now, I’ve lost my train of thought.

Matt: You’re taking Shilajit and sleep like a baby.

Jeff: Yeah, so I’m taking Shilajit to sleep like a log.

Matt: That’s better. I’ve never been able to wake a log up in the morning, but anyway.

Jeff: But no, in terms of the energy that you’re getting from the Coenzyme Q10, obviously it is not an arousal type of energy, it’s not going to stimulate.

Matt: No, it’s not pushing the throttle, it just makes sure you’re capable of it.

Jeff: Right.

Matt: So, Coenzyme Q10 makes it capable of getting Oxygen—you know how we’ve got blood pressure, and we’ve got barometric pressure and everything? It takes a certain amount of pressure to get Oxygen out of our blood into our cells. Coenzyme reduces the amount of pressure. Shilajit does that so much better, five times more effectively compared to what the Coenzyme Q10 does.

Jeff: So, therefore, would that be good for somebody with high blood pressure?

Matt: Yeah, absolutely. Often we’ll prescribe Coenzyme Q10 for people with high blood pressure because their heart doesn’t have to work as hard to increase the pressure to get the Oxygen across.

Jeff: So, therefore, in a sports performance point of view, as well too, Coenzyme Q10 has to be phenomenal for improving endurance?

Matt: Yeah, yeah. But, the Shilajit makes more Coenzyme Q10 in your muscles than supplementing with CoQ10, so 1gram of Shilajit which you’ll get out of four of our ALPHA MARS capsules is going to give you more Coenzyme Q10 than taking—see, the strongest CoQ10 supplement I’ve ever seen is 300mgs, and there’s probably stronger, but that’s the strongest one I’ve seen—so, you’re taking at least five of those to be equivalent to four of the ALPHA MARS, and CoQ10 is really expensive too. So, Shilajit is superior in building up the amount of CoQ10 in the cells.

It’s really good then for Altitudes, really good for Sports Performance, and that’s why that Shilajit, traditionally, is a panacea for High Altitude and Altitude Sickness, yeah, really good for anyone’s that climbing a hill.

Jeff: So, any athletes that are endurance based athletes if they’re taking ALPHA MARS, just purely for the Coenzyme Q10 effects before they train, Rugby players, NFL players, anybody who’s doing any sort of—UFC, obviously.

Matt: So, what’s our main energy currency? ATP. Cool name too. The main energy currency is ATP, and loading up on Shilajit before an event can actually reduce the amount of ATP you lose through exercise by up to 20%, so it prolongs your amount of power output, it reduces the energy cost of power. So, you’re going through less ATP when you’re pounding out and really working hard to win. So, it increases Coenzyme Q10 production in the Mitochondria, it reduces the loss of ATP by up to 20%; those two things alone you can imagine what that’s going to do for your Resilience and your Endurance, and everything like that. Then, you combine with what it does on a mental level where it gives you that motivation, that drive, that Resilience.

I keep talking about the word Resilience. The best way to describe this stuff, it really toughens you up mentally, physically, spiritually, that sort of thing. So, a massive boost to energy. There’s studies on it where it’s been able to reverse the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and it does it by restoring the Mitochondrial Energy Production Pathways as well as restoring the HPA Axis controlling the Adrenal Gland.

Jeff: What’s the HPA Axis, again?

Matt: The HPA Axis is the Hypothalamus, Pituitary Adrenal Axis. I can’t believe you didn’t remember that. No. So, you’ve got your Hypothalamus in your brain to your Pituitary which is a switchboard for your Hormones, you’ve got your HPA Axis that controls your Adrenals, you’ve got your HPG Axis that controls your Gonads, your HPT Axis that controls your Thyroid. So, these are all running concurrently. We’ll do a segment purely on HPA, I’ll show you how the HPA Axis controls the Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, how it leads to Thyroid problems, how it leads to Hormonal problems.

Jeff: Wow!

Matt: It’s fun, I’ll show you how to do that, it’s easy, but we’ll do it another day though. So, basically, Shilajit on a cellular level and in the big picture will improve your Resilience, improve your Energy Production, preserve the fuel to make it last longer and reduce the amount of waste you’re building up.

Jeff: Gosh.

Matt: And, that’s what it will do, just on a general level. Also, generally, very good for the Gut.

Jeff: Really?

Matt: Yeah, well there’s studies that show it cure—I’ve got to stop saying that word—it can help stress induced stomach ulcers, so it’s actually been able to heal up the stomach wall when you’ve got ulcers. As well as that, it improves Digestion, and like I was saying before, the carrier molecules to drive in your Amino Acids and your Nutrients and everything into your body.

The weirdest thing is it also helps Detoxification, so it helps to take the good stuff in and it helps to take the bad stuff out, so on a general level it’s just so good for balancing out your Elimination Pathways and stopping you accumulating certain toxins.

So, on a general level it can balance your Immune System. So, your Immune System is like a seesaw, one side deals with little things, so stuff that’s smaller than an immune cell, so one side eats things and engulfs it and removes that way, but then the other side deals with the things that are too big and flushes it away. You don’t have to be too clever with Immune stuff, the stuff’s either too small or too big to fit inside a cell and you’ve got either two different strategies according to that.

Shilajit will help to balance out your Immune System regardless of which way it’s gone out of whack. So, if you’ve got Immune Suppression it will pick it up, if you’ve got an overactive Immune System with Autoimmunity it will help to bring it down. If you’ve got an overactive Allergic side it will bring that down.

Jeff: So, things like Lupus and that sort of stuff?

Matt: Yeah, yeah. I’m not going to say you’re going to cure all those things with it, don’t trick me into that.

Jeff: No, no.

Matt: But yeah, basically, what it will do is balance out that Immune System, flatten it out, a very good Anti-inflammatory, very good for Cellular Energy production, helps to balance out the Hormones, helps you to adapt to Stress, and it helps you to adapt to all sorts of stresses: temperature change, so if it goes really hot or really cold it looks after you, if you get High Blood Pressure, Low Blood Pressure, it’s all running around the middle, it’s really, really neat.

Jeff: So, what’s the dosage then? How much Shilajit should you be getting?

Matt: About a gram.

Jeff: About a gram?

Matt: Yeah, when you have a look at the bell curve and that sort of stuff, if you are somewhere between 70 kilos and 120 kilos body weight, you’re looking at about a gram, is about the right dose for you. Taking extra doesn’t seem to do too much, but they’ve done studies up to about 5grams per kilo body weight and still haven’t been able to make anything sick, so it’s very low toxicity. You can take more, but taking more doesn’t necessarily do more. Most of the research is on a gram and that seems to be the ideal dose, which is what four ALPHA MARS capsules a day will give you a gram.

The Hormonal effects are really interesting.

Jeff: Alright. So, are we going to talk about guys and girls now?

Matt: Yeah. We’ll talk about it because it’s very interesting, and the hard bit is to try to understand how powerful herbal tools are, and when I say herbal tools I’m not talking about herbalists, herbal tools that drive me insane, they use words like Liver Tonic, don’t ever say Liver Tonic to me. Anyway, so basically with the Hormones your Pituitary Gland in your brain will release chemicals, a Follicle Stimulating Hormone and a Luteinising Hormone and all that sort of stuff, you’ll see it measured on pathology tests.

Follicle Stimulating Hormone, if you’re a bloke, it will tell your testicles to make sperm and it makes Testosterone as well. And, so, in blokes the Shilajit will increase sperm production. I’ll tell you the stats, it can boost up your Testosterone by over 20%, and this is in about seven days, so within about a week, your Testosterone usually goes up over 20% if it’s normal, but you’ve seen all those case studies we’ve got with all those blokes coming in after blood tests and their Testosterone level is like 1, 2 and 3. The range goes from 10 to 30 and these guys were hardly registering. Within one week we managed to get most of those people into the mid-range, so that’s a hell of a lot more than a 20% jump, that was hundreds of percentages of jumps to get them to normal.

Jeff: Amazing, yeah.

Matt: But, once normal we can increase your Testosterone by about 20 to 25% every week, just to keep it right up into that top level and keep it there. It increases sperm production by about 35%, so that’s why we’ve got all ALPHA babies everywhere.

Jeff: Now, my count, and it’s a rough count, is around 16 ALPHA babies that we know of, and that’s from people who are, effectively, shooting blanks. Gone to doctors looking at fertility and all the rest of it.

Matt: See, a lot of guys, after gear, after it switches off.

Jeff: Yeah. One guy had Chemotherapy as well too.

Matt: Oh, that’s right.

Jeff: So, 15 of the 16 babies are boys.

Matt: Boys, it’s wild eh.

Jeff: It’s crazy. I don’t believe that one that’s a girl, maybe that was a—no, it snuck through.

Matt: Oh you never know, ALPHA girl.

Jeff: But anyway, amazing.

Matt: She might be an ALPHA Fem. So, basically, a 35% increase in sperm production, that’s a bucket load of sperm, don’t imagine that. It increases sperm movement by over 60%, so they’re jumping, they’re jumping out of the bucket. We’re looking about migrating ‘spamon’, a migrating sperm salmon, ‘spamon’.

Jeff: That’s amazing.

Matt: I’ll do that next…

Jeff: That’s good. If you’re looking for Fertility certainly we’ve had some great results, and no wonder why if it’s producing results like that.

Matt: Yeah, that’s right. So, basically, with the men it can significantly increase Testosterone through the Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone.

In women, menstruating women, so if you’re getting your periods, the first half of your menstrual cycle Follicle Stimulating Hormone can convert your Testosterone through to Estrogen which will mature an egg.
That’s great, that’s what supposed to happen.

Jeff: If you’re pregnant.

Matt: So, what’s supposed to happen, if you want to be really healthy and awesome, the first half of your menstrual cycle as a woman is you’re converting Testosterone to Estrogen, it matures and egg, so you can ovulate effectively. And, it then also makes extra Estrogen, which is great for Hair, Skin, Nails, maintaining Breast Tissue, Cardiovascular Tissue, bone, all that sort of thing.

Jeff: Right.

Matt: The other beneficial things from Estrogen is, it holds that little bit of extra fat and fluid out onto the hips, and that sort of stuff, which is very healthy for the women.

Jeff: Very healthy.

Matt: But, if you’re an athlete, which a lot of our listeners are, and you are preparing for a body building show or a physique comp, or if you are not an athlete but you’ve just got a problem where you hold fat and fluid on your hips and waist, using Shilajit in those people you’re going to make more Estrogen, you’re going to hold a little bit more fat and fluid on the hips and the breast tissue and that sort of stuff. Very good for a lot of things, but is not necessarily going to help you win a completion.

Jeff: Yeah, right.

Matt: If you have been a female competitive athlete and you’ve lost a whole heap of fat and everything like that prepping for your comp and your periods have stopped, often what will happen they’ll go to the doctor, the doctor will do a Hormone test and say, “Why have you got Menopausal levels of Estrogen?” You’ve pretty much pushed yourself into Menopause through extreme dieting. In those people they can use ALPHA MARS to trigger their Menstrual Cycle to start again. And, in that situation they only need one bottle and often what will happen is it will increase that Estrogen production from their Testosterone, kick that Menstrual Cycle—reboot the system, pretty much. Then, they can take it out.

But, if you are a Menstruating woman preparing for a competition and you don’t want any extra fat or fluid on your Lower Abdomen, Hips and Thighs and that sort of stuff, then I wouldn’t use ALPHA MARS.

Jeff: Stay away from that.

Matt: But, if you have stopped your periods and you have pretty much put yourself into Menopause…

Jeff: Or, if you are a Menopausal woman.

Matt: Yeah, that’s the other group. If you are Menopausal then what will happen is, that Follicle Stimulating Hormone released by the Shilajit will tell your body to make more Estrogen, and it doesn’t matter where—if your ovaries aren’t capable of doing it, it can trigger other pathways to do it from fat or from the Adrenals and that sort of stuff. So, using Shilajit for Menopausal women is brilliant, it gets rid of the Hot Flushes, Night Sweats, the Dryness, it also helps out a lot of Mood stuff, Motivation, Drive, Libido—you know, you turn back into a sexual Tyrannosaurus.

Jeff: We’ve had a few testimonials come back from Menopausal women who have been saying, Yeah, definitely all these things,” but the big bonus, sex drive is back.

Matt: Big boners?

Jeff: Big bonus.

Matt: Sorry, I got distracted.

Jeff: Ugh.

Matt: But anyway, in saying that, Andropause is the male version of Menopause, and they often struggle with big boners, so in those sort of situations using ALPHA MARS for Male Menopause will also help with Libido, Motivation, Drive, Boners, as well as Build Muscle, Maintain Bone, and everything like that.

Jeff: That’s fantastic. Certainly, as far as the ALPHA MARS is concerned, again, the functional feedback from a lot of guys is saying, “Definitely helps with performance in the bedroom,” and as Matt would say, “Put a horn on the Jellyfish,” and I think a lot of guys that have used the product would definitely say that. And, a large part of that, Matt, is due to the Shilajit being in there. Correct?

Matt: Yeah, absolutely. I’ll tell you another interesting thing that kind of follows on from what we’re talking about, did you know that Coenzyme Q10 and Hormones are all made out of Cholesterol.

Jeff: No, I didn’t know that.

Matt: Well, they are. So, is Vitamin D and…

Jeff: Well, I knew that.

Matt: Yeah, of course you did now. So, what you’ll find happening with Shilajit, an interesting feature, and it’s not hard to imagine that its ability to increase Coenzyme Q10 and its ability to increase Hormonal Production, one of the side effects of using Shilajit is it lowers bad Cholesterol. It actually uses the Cholesterol from within your body as a building block to make Hormones and Coenzyme Q10.

Jeff: That’s awesome.

Matt: So, instead of having this horrible stuff floating around that’s going to make you die, it converts it to something that makes you live longer.

Jeff: That’s awesome.

Matt: Yeah, cool huh?

Jeff: That is really cool.

Matt: Yeah, I reckon.

Jeff: Matt, is there anything else about Hormones for men or women on Shilajit, or have we covered that?

Matt: That’s the main thing, it’s just understand that in men it specifically does Testosterone, but in younger Menstruating women it will do Estrogen as well as Testosterone, Progesterone and everything else. So, just be aware that, that increased Estrogen is making you healthier and all that sort of stuff.

Jeff: Let me ask you a hypothetical question, Matt. As I said, Toni has suffered from Chronic Fatigue which you helped her with a great deal. If a woman was suffering from Chronic Fatigue you’d put her onto the Infrared, which is all your Electrolytes, Schisandra, some other great herbs. Would you also then recommend something like the Shilajit as well, too?

Matt: Yeah, yeah.

Jeff: Again, I know that there’s going to be an increase in Estrogen, but let’s face it, if you’re dead tired and you can’t get out of bed, it’s probably…

Matt: And, you’re not competing and looking for striated Glutes and Hamies, then absolutely.

Jeff: Yeah, so that would be a good time to use it?

Matt: Yeah.

Jeff: So, could somebody like that who’s suffering from really bad Chronic Fatigue, could a woman use the ALPHA MARS?

Matt: Yeah, absolutely. That’s when it’s used. And, often what will happen in those sorts of situations too, is they can actually have total Hormonal dysregulation. So, it can actually help to go in and fix that. But, because it’s really good as an Anti-inflammatory, it’s really good for the Immune System, it’s really good for Detox, it’s fantastic for all of those sorts of things.

Jeff: Fantastic. Matt, now are we finished on Shilajit, or have you got anything else you want to add? Last word on that?

Matt: No, that’ll do. Eat it.

Jeff: Alright. Mate, we’ve got some FAQs here:

Fiona H: “Hi guys, my husband is a massive fan of your podcasts and uses your Alpha Mars.” Well, thanks very much Fiona, that’s great.

“I too have started to listen to your podcasts as he will not stop talking about them, and wow, what a great show you guys put on, thanks very much.

My question is to Matt. I’m in my 30s, eat well, and train every day. The only part of my body that lets me down is Varicose Veins. They’re unsightly and cause me daily pain. What can I do? Thanks – Fiona.”

Varicose Veins, Matt. And, we’ve been talking about actually bringing out some protocols for people for treating Varicose Veins Matt. So, we should look at that.

Matt: Yeah, we should. So, with Varicose Veins what we’re looking at is a combination of features. There are weakened valves in the veins, so that is a part, there is also a tendency to have stickier, gluggier, maybe clottier blood where the red blood cells are all clumped up together and possible from Fibrin and everything.

Jeff: What’s Fibrin?

Matt: It’s like cobwebby stuff. If you get an injury it makes it easier to clot your blood, and it’s not supposed to do it though, until you get an injury, so it floats around. It’s pretty cool under a microscope, so by the time I take your blood out and put it under a slide I can watch this Fibrin just start popping out, it’s like Spiderman shooting little webs at things, and it just glues it together, and then pops out, glues it together. It comes out of the Hypersecretory Platelets that are involved in the clotting process, they glow like little bubbles and then this other stuff pops out. It’s cool man. It looks really cool under a microscope.

Jeff: So, is that the cause of Varicose Veins?

Matt: Part of it. You’ve got to have a combination of features. So, you’ve got to have gluggier, stickier blood that results in bad circulation with poor integrity of the little valves that stop it all from falling backwards and busting and creating a Varicose Vein. The most common causes of the gluggy, sticky blood is Inflammation, Hormonal problems such as Estrogen Dominance which makes your blood stickier, Liver problems which results in a thing called the Acute Phase Response—see, your red blood cells are like magnets, positive charges that are supposed to be on the outside, so whenever these positive charges get next to each other they keep pushing each other away to stop the red blood cells from clumping up.

The Liver can actually take those positive charges off it, and allow the red blood cells to all roam around in packs. So, instead of having a big gap in between them they just roam around like coins on top of each other. And, then what happens when they get slightly damaged or Inflamed or busted, it’s very easy for that to form a clot or conglomeration of blood. What then happens in the veins, they’ve got these little valves that are supposed to stop it from falling back down your leg, so if those veins are losing their integrity because of Inflammation, Oxidative Stress, then this clumpy blood stuff can start to fall down, and then you can’t pump it back up.

So, what we do is, we try to look for the cause, which is probably Estrogen Dominance, or Genetic stuff; there’s a lot of different blood disorders you can get that can contribute to it, or Hormonal problems. But, in the meantime is un-sticky your blood, thin it out, so Horse Chestnut, Aspirin like herbs, Willow Barks and that sort of stuff do it. Horse Chestnut is one of my favourites because it’s been studied with Varicose Veins, so you can take that internally. You can put it as a cream, it feels really weird. But anyway, the other thing that’s really, really important is Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids. So, Bioflavonoids are things like Quercetin, Rutin, Hesperidin, Luteolin—Luteolin is one of the best because that’s also anti Estrogen.
What those things do is they improve the integrity of your Microcapillaries and maintain the integrity or the Elasticity of the valves, and they’re very good Anti-Inflammatories. So, a typical protocol for Varicose Veins would be Horse Chestnut mixed in with Vitamin C and Quercetin.

Jeff: And, take that as a tablet?

Matt: Take that as a tablet internally, then a look for the cause. Out of our product range that ALPHA VENUS is brilliant because it does the Anti-Inflammatory, does the Antioxidant, it regulates Estrogen whether it’s bad or not, keeps everything healthy, so ALPHA VENUS.

Jeff: And, just to help Fiona out a little bit more, how much Vitamin C, how much Horse Chestnut, and how much White Willow Bark?

Matt: With Vitamin C you only need 2 or 3grams a day. I wouldn’t have any more than one gram at a time because it can give you the watery poo.

Jeff: Well, you say that, but what is the Australian recommended does for Vitamin C? 80 mgs?

Matt: Yeah, something like that.

Jeff: It’s just crazy.

Matt: Don’t follow that.

Jeff: So, go buy the Vitamin C separately. So 1 gram one time or—it’s water soluble so you need it a couple of times.

Matt: I do a gram, so 1 gram three times a day.

Jeff: Okay.

Matt: If you forget lunch, that’s cool, you’ve got your two instead of your three.

Jeff: What about White Willow Bark?

Matt: Quercetin and that, Quercetin is about 500 mg dose.

Jeff: You should be able to pick that up in the health food shop?

Matt: Yeah. Rutin makes Quercetin.

Jeff: Rutin?

Matt: Depends what you’re Rutin.

Jeff: God, what’s happened to us today? I go away for a week and you’ve gone crazy.

Matt: We’ll blame Steve Eadie.

Jeff: So, that’s the Quercetin. White Willow Bark, how much?

Matt: I can’t remember. Horse Chestnut I go for 2grams. I don’t actually use White Willow Bark; I don’t know why I mentioned it? It’s just that the medical treatments are your Aspirins, and that’s what a Naturopath…

Jeff: But, the Horse Chestnut’s better anyway?

Matt: Yeah, it’s got all that. The Horse Chestnut kills it, it’s great.

Jeff: Well, thanks Fiona, I hope that helps. Give that a try and hopefully that should give you some relief. It’s probably something, Matt, we could have a look into a bit more, actually.

Matt: Yeah, Dragon’s Breath is bloody good. When it hurts use the Dragon’s Breath, because Dragon’s Breath gets rid of the Varicose Vein pain.

Jeff: Yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing with mine. Actually, I might have to use some of those protocols myself, Matt.

Matt: Yeah, go. You should have asked me.

Jeff: Too busy.

Logan Marshall: “Hey guys, I work on a 12 hour rotating shift pattern, so lack of sleep is a big thing for me. I know my Cortisol is high because of stress levels and working out, lack of sleep amongst other things that aids in weight gain. I’m just wondering if you could do a podcast on Cortisol and how to manage the lower levels of it in your system? And, do you guys have any products on the market, currently, or coming up, that will assist in high Cortisol levels?

That’s timely, Logan, actually. And, just as a footnote before we get into Logan’s question. Adam and Beth were also asking about Adrenal Fatigue from an FAQ podcast a few weeks ago. We haven’t forgotten about you guys, Cortisol is such a massive topic and there’s so many facets and so many things that we have to put forward, we are spending our time to actually present that information in a really meaningful way.

Matt: And, we’ve made a product for it.

Jeff: In the meantime, just quietly, because we had nothing else to do. So, Adam and Beth, that’s coming. Logan, as Matt just said, yes we actually do have a product coming out that will help with Adrenal Fatigue. But Matt, take it away.

Matt: Well, for starters I don’t know how Logan’s question got read out because it’s the first one without a big suck arse compliment at the start. So, well done Logan for getting through Jeff’s screening process.

Jeff: No way, I absolutely love it. I love it when people are appreciating what we do, it’s great.

Matt: Yeah, [0:39:57]. So, basically, understand that we need Cortisol at certain times of the day. So, what you’ll find happening normally, first thing in the morning when the sun comes up we get a big surge of Cortisol to wake us up, it’s Anti-Inflammatory, it oils the works and it helps us to get up and get started for the day. Then, what’s supposed to happen is it’s supposed to drop, drop, drop so at night when we’re in a deep sleep we’ve got a really low level of Cortisol. When you’re burning the candle at both ends, when you’re working long shifts and everything, and you’re working 12 hour shifts during the day and trying to train at night and that sort of stuff…

Jeff: Yeah.

Matt: What ends up happening is your body starts adapting. As you know, we’re an adaptive organism. It realises that it’s only got a certain amount of Cortisol that it can make and pump out during a day, so what it does is it starts holding out on you a bit, instead of giving you a big surge in the morning and then switching it off at night, it’s not sure if you’re going to need Cortisol at the end of the day because you’ve been falling into these habits where you should be winding down, maybe, and you’re starting to pick it back up. In that situation it says, “Well, I’m not going to give you a big surge of Cortisol when you think you need it. So, I’m not going to give you a big surge of Cortisol to wake you up, help you deal with Stress, help you deal with Pain and Inflammation, because I’ve got to conserve some of this Cortisol to just give you an irritating trickle throughout the evening just in case you’re going to train, just in case you’re going to stay awake all night, just in case you’re going to have some fun.”

So, what it does, is it says, “Right, I’m going to just hold out on your all day and give you bugger all Cortisol when you really need it just so I’ve got some left when you don’t need it.” So, the key is, to understand that we can retrain your Cortisol response, and it requires certain good habits and routine on your end to force it to switch off in the evenings. Also, understand that if you’re training and that sort of stuff with intensity you’re going to have a Cortisol surge. Supplements and that sort of stuff really find it hard to stop you having a big Cortisol surge in response to stress, it’s your survival mechanism, after all. So, if were to give you something that’s going to tell your body not to react to stress, it’s a Naturopathic equivalent of a chemical straight jacket, you can’t do that, as such.

What we want to do is, we want to retrain your body into giving a big surge of Cortisol in the morning through getting up and maybe sprightly train in the morning, start getting into the habit of doing some cardio or something first thing in the morning to retrain that Cortisol to go up in the morning. Then, what you want it do is drop all day. At night times using things like Magnesium, Melatonin, other sleepy sort of products like Gingko, the Bacopa, which, actually, I only look at them as sleep products, most other people look at them as brain enhancers—but, other sleepy products, you know, your Valerians and Hops and that, they’ll all slow down your Cortisol release at night to force you into a trough. That will allow you to have more Cortisol in the morning to get you up and going.

Jeff: With Logan being on a rotating shift, obviously that time of day is going to change for him.

Matt: That’s why we’ve got to trick it, that’s why we’ve got to use things. So, in my clinic I do a lot of stuff with shift workers, and what we do is we have to cheat. Okay? So, what they’re doing is not natural so we have to go a little bit above and beyond natural lifestyle things to fix it. So, we use Melatonin in the evening to force it down, and in the morning I actually use Adrenal Gland extract. You can’t get it in Australia, but you can import it. It’s just Adrenal Gland extract, we do a big dose of that in the morning and a little dose at lunch. So, you go big dose, little dose, so we recreate that, and then we force your Cortisol to go low at night. And, you’ll have to switch your routine depending on whether you’re on day shift or night shift.

Jeff: Yeah, that’s great.

Matt: The importance of when you’re sleeping during the day is to make sure the room is pitch black otherwise your Melatonin is not really touching the sides.

Jeff: Yeah.

Matt: So, that’s basically how to do it. And, a couple of other little tricks, when you’re training, to stop that Cortisol from damaging your muscle tissue we want to stop your body releasing as much, and like I said, you can’t flatten it, and you don’t really want to flatten it either because Cortisol maintains Blood Pressure and Anti-inflammatory and all that sort of stuff, so you’re going to have some whether you like it or not.

Jeff: Yeah, it’s just a natural by-product of training anyway, isn’t it?

Matt: Yeah, yeah of course. And, the harder you train the more Cortisol you’re going to have.

Jeff: Well that’s—yeah.

Matt: Anyway, what you’ll find happening—pre-training if you use some Magnesium, and CLA is a really cool tool. CLA stops the damaging effects of Cortisol. It doesn’t stop Cortisol release but it stops the Cortisol that has been released from binding into the Cortisol Receptors on Muscle and Fat and Immune Cells.

Jeff: That’s cool.

Matt: And, it can actually stop Cortisol from breaking down Muscle Preserving Fat and it can stop Cortisol from Suppressing your Immune System.

Jeff: And, just a tip on the CLA, buy the expensive one, and if it repeats on your really badly throw it in the freezer. Matt taught me that trick a while ago, it works a treat.

Matt: Yeah, that’s right. It’s just the rancid oils. Freeze it and it breaks down later.

Jeff: Mm.

Matt: But, they’re the best tricks. And, we’ll do another podcast specifically on the HPA Axis, we just mentioned it earlier, so we will do that, we’ll do a full HPA Dysfunction podcast, we’ll break down the different stages of Cortisol Dysfunction. Because, what we have to understand is, you don’t get Adrenal Exhaustion, you don’t get Overactive Adrenal, we’re constantly hovering, we’re in a constant state of flux, we’re constantly trying to adapt to our environment and work out how to preserve these survival—you know. So, I’ll show you how it all works and then you can see how to add which products in when.

Jeff: Yeah, that makes sense. That’s great. Matt, that’s it. Is there anything else that you wanted to add?

Matt: No.
